F1600 Season to Conclude in Pittsburgh this Weekend
Salem, NH – The season-ending rounds of the F1600 Formula F Championship Series for 2015 are set to take place this coming weekend at Pittsburgh International Race Complex with points leader Scott Andrews poised to seal the title with relative ease.
The Australian’s Championship lead is sustainable, and a moderate performance should give him the Series crown.
It has been a tale of two halves for the 2015, 21-race season. Andrews rocketed out of the gate, taking win after win, including a come-from-last drive at Mid-Ohio at the season’s mid-point.
With a massive Championship lead for Andrews, the spotlights were then turned to newcomer Jordan Cane, who joined the tour at VIR, and Skylar Robinson, as those two have seemingly dominated the second half of the season.
Cane, since arriving in Team Pelfrey colors in June, has scored more points than any other driver, but missing the first six rounds of the Championship due to age restrictions means any shot at the overall title would be unrealistic.
Robinson, though, has vaulted himself to second in the points and is coming off a double win at New Jersey Motorsports Park for K-Hill Motorsports. Sitting 100 points back from Andrews in the standings, Robinson will essentially need a lights out performance at Pittsburgh and bad luck to fall on Andrews for him to take the Championship title.
Robinson is joined by two more Mygales out of the K-Hill stable, entries for Watkins Glen winner Austin Mack and newcomer Camerson Das, who ran well in his Series debut at New Jersey at the end of August.
And despite those three at the front, a number of other drivers have been knocking on the door for their first career F1600 victories all season long.
Two third-place drives for Robert Megennis in New Jersey in his Team Pelfrey Mygale showed his hand, as he also ran strongly in the Series visit to Pittsburgh in early August.
His Team Pelfrey teammates Ben Auriemma and Andrew Hobbs have also been a fixture at the front of the field for the season, and both continue to search for the top step of the podium.
In the Masters Class, Steve Bamford was quick in the previous visit to the new Pittsburgh track, and Jim Goughary is coming off a strong showing at New Jersey, where he took home the Masters Class trophy in race one with a drive to a fifth place finish. Bamford, however, has the season-long Masters Class title locked up, underscored by a victory at VIR in June.
The Pittsburgh weekend kicks off with double free practice sessions for the F1600 drivers on Friday, followed by morning qualifying and an afternoon race on Saturday, and two races on Sunday.
