Formula Race Promotions Readies for Final Event of 2024

August 9, 2024

With almost a full season of competition now in the books, it is now time for teams and competitors of the Formula Race Promotions program to close out the season at Summit Point Motorsports Park. The finale event weekend will see official champions crowned as the 2024 season comes to a close.

In the F1600 class, Team Pelfrey driver Sebastian Mateo Naranjo, after a stellar season standing on the podium in fifteen of the seventeen races so far, has already secured the title. He will look to add to his results resume at SMP with three more opportunities to claim the checkered flag. With the real battle for positions two through five behind him, a good or bad weekend for any of these drivers can shuffle the point standings. Karsten Defonce comes into the weekend nine points ahead of third-place runner Timothy Steele while the Tovo Twins, Ethan, and Jackson sit fourth and fifth respectively. With second through fifth separated by 88 points, it will be a dog fight for the second and third steps on the championship podium. With drops already factored into these positions, a strong or poor result could mix up the order substantially.

In the F1600 Master’s class, Scott Rubenzer is seven points ahead of Joe Colasacco but rumor is that Colasacco will be forced to miss the event. Third in line is David Livingston Jr. as he is just ahead of Bob Reid and Phil Kingham. If Colasacco does miss the event, Rubenzer could be crowned champion if Livingston does not have a near-perfect weekend.

Gabriel Cahan is atop the F2000 Championship point standings as he and one of his good friends, Dane McMahon, are in a fight for the title. Separated by only nineteen points, the two drivers have been the class of the field. Tim Minor, who is two-for-two in his two races this year, will be back in the fight this weekend, which could cause some issues for Cahan and McMahon in their points battle. While there is no threat for the title, Summit Point is Minor’s home track and he is very hard to beat.  Look for Tim to try to set a new track record for both qualifying and race. The battle for P3 in the championship is also a tight one with Carter Sheets third, twenty-three points ahead of Robert Wright with Jonathan Farmer a distant P5.

In the Atlantic divisions, Matthew Butson and Nathan Byrd have already secured the title in their respective classes with Butson on top in the 016 class and Byrd ahead in Atlantic Open. In 016, John Mcaleer leads Keith Grant by twenty-two points for the title of Vice Champion with Dudley Fleck only five points behind Grant making it a three-driver race for P2. Richard Zober enters the weekend in fifth. In the Atlantic Open class Paulie Gatto trails Byrd with no chance of catching him but could come under pressure from both Austin Holtgraewe and Steve Hamilton in third and fourth as that duo is separated by only six points. Charles Livingston comes into the weekend fifth in the championship battle.

“It’s both an exciting and sad time of the year,” explained FRP’s Bob Wright. “We’re happy to crown new champions and close the season with momentum, but it’s also a bit sad that it will be many months until the 2025 season starts. Good luck to all teams and drivers next weekend and thank you for a great season.”
