Kotyk Beats Cowley to the Line
Wampum, PA - Team Pelfrey's Jonathan Kotyk, a Team USA Scholarship candidate, doubled up on Sunday morning at Pittsburgh International Race Complex, taking his second win of the weekend in F1600 Championship Series competition. Kotyk fought off his teammate on the 16th and final lap, beating points leader Matthew Cowley to the line by .054 seconds in a photo finish. Zach Holden, from K-Hill Motorsports, completed the podium while Mike Scanlan won in the Masters Class.
Quotes from the Top Finishers:
Jonathan Kotyk:
"I'm kind of getting used to this. It's been a good weekend. It was a tougher race today than yesterday. I wanted to stay up front and get to the inside on the last lap. I really have no expectations for the third race, but I'd like to bring home a third win."
Matthew Cowley:
"Right to the end it was anybody's race. The top three of us were right there. I made a move toward Jonathan at the end of the race and it didn't quite pay off, it was a close finish and a great race overall. It's another finish on the podium and another over the guy that is second in the Championship."
Zach Holden:
"There were times during the race we were trying to pull a fast lap for the points and the pole in the next race. It took a couple of tries but we finally got that lap in."
Mike Scanlan (Masters Class - 1st Place):
"It was a good clean race up to the end with Joel Haas, we were both going to time where that last pass was going to come. When he went by me my only recourse was to try a re-pass up the hill and I had a little more motor."
Of note, Joel Haas finished second in Masters competition after his Rice Race Prep crew was at the track late into the night changing an engine and fixing suspension damage. Dave Petzko scored a career best result with a third place finish in class.
